These new works explore the animate and mythic landscape, drawing inspiration from Jack Kirby compositions, tarot cards, dreams and folk stories. As I work on this series some rules, subject matter and parameters emerge. It is clear to me that I am thinking about Jack Kirby not only as a composer of complex panels, but a volcano of pure imagination. I’m thinking specifically of Kamandi: The Last Boy on Earth his take on The Planet of the Apes. In this incarnation, the post apocalyptic  landscape is peopled with various regions ruled by different animal human hybrids. They wear elaborate costumes ranging from 17th century pirate garb to World War 2 soldier uniforms. I realized that these characters are descendants of the animal/human hybrids present on the cave walls of Chauvet and Lascaux. Kamandi is science fiction action but a shamanic spirit resides in the stories.

These works will be featured in an exhibition at One Grand Gallery in Portland, Oregon in January 2027.
