In the age of quick selfies and fleeting digital images, a portrait is an opportunity to create a living image. (Here’s a link to an interesting article from the New York Times about contemporary portraiture) For portrait commissions I work in either oil on panel or watercolor on paper. A good portrait emerges out of the energy between the sitter and the artist. I prefer the sitter to sit for me at my studio in NW Portland, so we may get to know each other. I am willing to go to the subject to be in their own space. Portrait sessions could take from one 90 minute to three hour session to several two hour sessions depending on size and medium.
If I must work from a photograph I ask that several different views are provided so that it can be a unique image.
All oil portraits will be painted on cradled wood panel.
All watercolor on cold press Arches watercolor paper.
Once a size and medium is agreed upon, half of the amount is required to begin and the remainder due within 30 days of completion.
